Sicily - Land of Myth
Sicilia – Overview
Located in the heart of the Mediterranean, Sicily is the largest island of this basin (25.832,29 km²). Around it there is a number of smaller islands, in the north the Aeolian islands and Ustica, Egadi islands located in the west, in the south Pelagie and Pantelleria island (with a total of 26.117,69 km²)
Sicilia – Coastline
Its coastline, predominantly north rocky, sandy south, covers an area of about 1000 km. In ancient times, its triangular shape gave her the Greek name of ‘’Trinacria’’, later called Sicania and Sicily, the name, which spread throughout the Middle Ages in southern Italy. The island was divided for centuries into three “Valleys” (Val Demone, Val de Noto and Val de Mazara), then in the 19th century, in seven provinces and finally from 1.927, in nine.
Sicilia – Landscape
A great movement characterizes the Sicilian landscape: indeed, the island is mountainous and full of hills. The most important is the massive Mount Etna (protected entirely by the institution of a large natural park), located in eastern Sicily. The volcano, with an approximate height of 3.300 m, is active and is the highest in Europe.
Along the northern coast stretching from east to west, part of the range of Peloritani, the Nebrodi and Madonie whose peaks rise to 2,000 m. At the end of the Madonie and in the west of the river Torto there are some irregular limestone formations, isolated or in groups, overlooking rolling hills.
To the east, between Messina and Mount Etna continues the chain of the Peloritani, quite similar to the mountains of Calabria.
Further south, always in the east of the island, there is a whole sequence of high plateaus made of lava, tuff, mostly limestone, deeply cut by suggestive cavity shaped by the waters flowing there. The center of Sicily, is hilly. This is the plateau called sulfurous, with a variable altitude between 500 and 700 meters (at the top of this plateau, at approximately 1.000 meters, the Mount Etna rises).
Sicilia – Weather
The weather is certainly Mediterranean, with hot summers and short, mild winters. The maximum temperature is recorded in July and August – on average 30 C °, the lowest between December and February – on average 10-14 C °. Water temperature varies between 16 ° C in winter and 27 ° C in summer. For a trip to Sicily, not having “Bathing“as main aim, middle months are recommend: half April until mid-June and September-October.
