Villages in Sicily
Villages in Sicily are called Borghi – plural of Borgo – and most of them are still not properly known as they deserve to be. Sicilian Villages, in particular, are home of a significantly rich historical heritage that involves different areas, such as: artistic heritage, religious fests and celebrations, folk shows, museums, fests and traditions. Not to mention local food and wine, which in many case is the cornerstone of the village. In Sicilian villages, local people are used to produce their own food though local farming and breeding. There, thanks to clean fresh mountain air and to the culture of “from farm to fork” – which is the norm – local people’s average age and the life expectancy rises significantly.
The notorious Italian TV show “Il borgo dei borghi” started in 2014 and it’s basically a competition among all the most beautiful villages in Italy. Sicily is the most awarded region of Italy, and the first edition winner was Gangi, in Sicily.
